Is Tesla under- or over-valued?

Valuing Tesla stock is incredibly difficult, and any metric has to be viewed as part of a bigger picture of Teslas overall performance. However, analysts commonly use some key metrics to help gauge the value of a stock.

Teslas P/E ratio

Teslas current share price divided by its per-share earnings (EPS) over a 12-month period gives a trailing price/earnings ratio of roughly 370x. In other words, Tesla stocks trade at around 370x recent earnings.

Thats relatively high compared to, say, the trailing 12-month P/E ratio for the NASDAQ 100 at the end of 2019 (27.29). The high P/E ratio could mean that investors are optimistic about the outlook for the stocks or simply that theyre over-valued.

Teslas PEG ratio

Teslas price/earnings-to-growth ratio can be calculated by dividing its P/E ratio by its growth – to give 3.3277. A low ratio can be interpreted as meaning the stocks offer better value, while a higher ratio can be interpreted as meaning the stocks offer worse value.

The PEG ratio provides a broader view than just the P/E ratio, as it gives more insight into Teslas future profitability. By accounting for growth, it could also help you if youre comparing the stock prices of multiple high-growth companies.

Teslas EBITDA

Teslas EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) is USD$5.8 billion.

The EBITDA is a measure of a Teslas overall financial performance and is widely used to measure a its profitability.

There are currently 26.8 million Tesla stocks held short by investors – thats known as Teslas short interest. This figure is 10.3% down from 29.9 million last month.

There are a few different ways that this level of interest in shorting Tesla stocks can be evaluated.

Teslas short interest ratio (SIR)

Teslas short interest ratio (SIR) is the quantity of Tesla stocks currently shorted divided by the average quantity of Tesla stocks traded daily (recently around 19.4 million). Teslas SIR currently stands at 1.38. In other words for every 100,000 Tesla stocks traded daily on the market, roughly 1380 stocks are currently held short.

However Teslas short interest can also be evaluated against the total number of Tesla stocks, or, against the total number of tradable Tesla stocks (the shares that arent held by insiders or major long-term shareholders – also known as the float). In this case Teslas short interest could be expressed as 0.03% of the outstanding stocks (for every 100,000 Tesla stocks in existence, roughly 30 stocks are currently held short) or 0.0335% of the tradable stocks (for every 100,000 tradable Tesla stocks, roughly 34 stocks are currently held short).

Such a low SIR usually points to an optimistic outlook for the stock price, with fewer people currently willing to bet against Tesla.

Teslas environmental, social and governance track record

Environmental, social and governance (known as ESG) criteria are a set of three factors used to measure the sustainability and social impact of companies like Tesla.

When it comes to ESG scores, lower is better, and lower scores are generally associated with lower risk for would-be investors.

Teslas total ESG risk score

Total ESG risk: 27.59

Socially conscious investors use ESG scores to screen how an investment aligns with their worldview, and Teslas overall score of 27.59 (as at 01/01/2019) is pretty weak – landing it in it in the 61st percentile of companies rated in the same sector.

ESG scores are increasingly used to estimate the level of risk a company like Tesla is exposed to within the areas of environmental (carbon footprint, resource use etc.), social (health and safety, human rights etc.), and governance (anti-corruption, tax transparency etc.).

Teslas environmental score

Environmental score: 1.25/100

Teslas environmental score of 1.25 puts it squarely in the 1st percentile of companies rated in the same sector. This could suggest that Tesla is a leader in its sector terms of its environmental impact, and exposed to a lower level of risk.

Teslas social score

Social score: 17.81/100

Teslas social score of 17.81 puts it squarely in the 1st percentile of companies rated in the same sector. This could suggest that Tesla is a leader in its sector when it comes to taking good care of its workforce and the communities it impacts.

Have Tesla stocks ever split?

Tesla stocks were split on a 5:1 basis on 31 August 2020. So if you had owned 1 share the day before before the split, the next day youd have owned 5 shares. This wouldnt directly have changed the overall worth of your Tesla stocks – just the quantity. However, indirectly, the new 80% lower stock price could have impacted the market appetite for Tesla stocks which in turn could have impacted Teslas stock price.

Tesla stock price volatility

Over the last 12 months, Teslas stocks have ranged in value from as little as $329.88 up to $895.9. A popular way to gauge a stocks volatility is its beta.

TSLA.US volatility(beta: 1.96)Avg. volatility(beta: 1.00)LowHigh

Beta is a measure of a stocks volatility in relation to the market. The market (NASDAQ average) beta is 1, while Teslas is 1.964. This would suggest that Teslas stocks are more volatile than the average for this exchange and represent, relatively-speaking, a higher risk (but potentially also market-beating returns).
