Fortress (Fe26) Railing Sections and Connectors are straightforward, durable, attractive, cost-effective and maintenance-free! The panels are double-dipped galvanized and powder coated, Gloss Black.
Deck Railings generally consist of 3 main elements; Posts, Rail Caps, and Panels (or Balusters or Cable Wire). Brazilian Wood Depot offers Steel Posts and Panels, by Fortress Building Products. The next section, “Dimensional Lumber”, will address Wood Posts and the different options for Rail Caps.
Fortress Fe26 Railing Panels and Posts
We are proud to offer our Decking customers Fortress Railing Panels in 6′ and 8′ lengths. These lengths are offered in both ‘Straight’ and ‘Adjustable’ (for stairs). Universal 1″ and Adjustable Brackets are also available for easy installation and a seamless, beautiful system. All elements are coated, Gloss-Black. Fortress manufactures a very large variety of Railing Panels. We only offer the basic panels which have two horizontal 1″ Square Tubing on the top and bottom and multiple 3/8″ vertical spindles. See the image to the right.
BWD also offers Fortress Steel Posts to match the Fortress Panels. They are 39.5″ tall and 2″ x 2″ (net dimensions). These Steel Posts are more expensive than Solid Ipe Posts, but are totally maintenance-free! See these posts in the image to the right.
BWD offers an assortment of Dimensional Lumber. Generally, these profiles are offered exclusively in Ipe. Ipe Dimensional Lumber goes well with ALL Brazilian Hardwood Species and Ipe tends to make for better dimensional lumber based on its superior stability. Below is a list of dimensional lumber we carry, which does not include the standard Decking and Siding profiles. Click the image below for a more comprehensive list of available profiles and dimensions.
As we all know, natural products like wood, aren’t perfectly straight. For this reason, The BoWrench, by Cepco, can be a VERY helpful tool! It uses the stability of the joist to create Fulcrum Leverage against the deck boards, straightening them out while fasteners are installed. BoWrench tools are not necessary for every job. They can come in particularly handy for the thicker, 5/4×6 deck boards. Most installers will not need it for standard, 1×6 decking. There are different methods to straighten boards out, while installing, but this product makes it a breeze! We have sold this product for years and most of the experienced BHW deck installers own one (or two!).
We also offer the adapter that has a wider space between the posts, to accommodate Double(or Sistered) Joists.
End Wax is necessary for EVERY JOB! It is an emulsion wax used to seal the ends of the boards after they are cut. Boards will most often already be treated with the wax, on the ends, when they arrive to the customer. Industry standards for lumber require that each board be slightly over the specified lengths. Even if you plan on using full-length boards, you’ll still have some cutting and waxing to do! Either to cut to a specific length or square-up manufacture cuts.
Applying the wax is simple. Just apply it to fresh-cut ends with a paint brush or a rag. It is best not to let the wax get to the face of the board. Don’t worry too much if there’s a little reach-over. It will typically weather away in a matter of days or weeks.
Why is it important? Moisture tends to escape from natural wood, from the endgrain. It’s known as, ‘capillary moisture loss’. This can lead to excessive checking or shallow cracking. It’s kind of ugly and totally avoidable. Wax should not be used on ripped edges or the face, or the bottom of boards! The capillaries generally run length-wise to the board, so there’s no reason to wax the ripped edges, and you should not. And NEVER apply the wax to the top or bottom of the boards. We will talk about how to apply the Oil to those surfaces, below.
Messmer’s Oil & Cleaner
Messmer’s UV Plus for Hardwood Decks
Messmer’s Hardwood Deck Oil out performs all other deck finishes that we’ve tried, and we’ve tried MANY. Wait five to ten days after installation and apply only one coat of deck finish. Apply a 2nd application after the boards begin to fade, which could be as soon as several months, or as long as two years later. It really depends on the sun exposure. Follow-up applications will be needed at progressively longer time periods between applications. Don’t apply a new coat of finish before deck begins to fade. This will prevent over-application, which could result in a sticky finish. See other very important application instructions on this page.
Messmer’s Wood and Deck Cleaner/Brightener powder concentrates are specially formulated to clean and brighten exterior wood decks, fences, siding, and other outdoor wood projects. Part A has a primary active ingredient of Sodium Percarbonate, which acts a deep-cleaner. Part B’s primary ingredient is Oxaclic Acid, which works to reverse different chemical reactions and is very effective at restoring the original colors. Usually, these products are not necessary for new decks or decks that were built in the last 18-24 months. It is very effective at restoring older decks that may not have been periodically maintained. See the instruction document with links to the video where I use these products on an old nasty deck!
Joist Tape can work miracles at extending the life of your joists. We don’t recommend Joist Tape with all fastening methods because some of them require the use of All-Weather Construction Adhesive. In those cases, the adhesive provides its own joist protection.
When this tape is applied to the top of decking joists, over ledger boards, and around support posts, it creates a waterproof seal that helps stop decay and wood rot. Rot is caused by moisture that stays in contact with treated and untreated lumber deck framing and the above decking material
These Paintable, anodized aluminum extrusions are for inside corners, outside corners, doors, and windows on your Siding project!
