For example, if Corys Tequila Corp. was trading at $30 per share and had a million outstanding shares, its market capitalization would be ($30 x 1 million shares) = $30 million.

It is common to see companies making transitions from one category to the other depending upon the change in their market cap valuations on a regular basis. Along with companies, other popular investments like mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are also categorized as small-cap, mid-cap, or large-cap.
